Lanna
café is
a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), initiated in
2001 by the Wakachiai NGO project that has been exporting
coffee grown
by hilltribe farmers in northern Thailand (the Lanna
region)
in accordance with Fairtrade standards since 1997.
Lanna café is a member of the Thai Tribal
Highland Arabica Coffee Production and Marketing Cooperative,
a
local hilltribe growers group in the Chiang Mai area.
This cooperative was facilitated through the Integrated
Tribal Development Program (ITDP), a member of the Fairtrade
Labeling Organization - International (FLO) that works
with northern Thailand tribal groups and
is certified by FLO.
All
of our coffee is purchased directly from the Thai Tribal
Highland Arabica Coffee Production and Marketing Cooperative.
The
Lanna café
organization's objective is to introduce high-quality
Thailand highland coffee to people not only in Thailand
but worldwide. Lanna
café
coffee sales assist the farmers of northern Thailand
hilltribes who do not have direct access to local and
international coffee markets. Lanna café
supports sustainable indigenous tribal farming that
promotes community development in northern Thailand
hilltribe villages.
Strict
quality-control measures are used by the Lanna café
coffee cooperative. Coffee berries are hand-picked at
optimum maturity, wet-processed, and sun-dried by the
farmers in their villages. Dried coffee beans are hulled
and graded by machine, and then culled by hand to insure
a high-quality superior-flavored product. The roasting
and packaging of Lanna café coffee is
continuously monitored to maintain quality.
